Spotlight On Recovery
Opportunity
Robin Graham, Publisher, came to us needing a fresh look for her magazine, Spotlight On Recovery. So I gathered my designers and think-tank to draft a battle plan on how to revamp the magazine so it appealed to Robin’s target audience and trumpeted the purpose of this publication.
Spotlight on Recovery is an outreach and resource magazine geared towards individuals affected directly or indirectly by overwhelming issues. The major challenge to us was Robin’s budget. We had to update the look and feel of the magazine, capture the passion, heart and soul that her writers put in each issue and not cost her any extra money to produce the piece.
Solution
To tackle the production budget issue, we kept the original format of color covers and black/white inside pages. Featuring new fonts and more sophisticated layouts to better project stories, the revamp was meant to give the magazine a more modern and dynamic edge and help readers to navigate their way through the magazine more easily. Defining a rhythm and pace was the first step. The old version lacked organization—it was hard to distinguish a feature from a department. By establishing a clear framework, Gail’s Graphic Designs helped readers navigate through the magazine. Adding photography and sticking with audience-appropriate fonts and colors gave the publication more visual interest.
Results
The results have been outstanding—Robin reports that her writers and subscribers love the new look and feel, and subscribers continue to send in compliments and rave reviews. We’re satisfied that our work is appreciated by a strong group of individuals.
